Have you ever slept in a cave, protected by the rock and mother earth? Our cave-houses have a natural accustic and thermic insulation. Our typical habitat has a constant temperature all over the year. It is cool in summer and not cold in winter. It is not built, it is excavated into the hill. Every room is unique.
Hi everybody, I have been living in a cave-house for more than 23 years and I would not change it for any conventional dwelling in the world! A cave maintains roughly the same temperature the whole year round (17 - 22°C). There is NO need for air conditioning in the summer and winter heating requirements are significantly lower than in conventionally built houses. I had always felt attracted by architecture & decoration. The development of the Al Jatib cave complex was a real challenge for me and definitely stimulated my creativity: just equipped with a pickaxe, in this organic shaped, round, enveloping space inside the rock, I could feel like a sculptor. I believe the result was good, as our troglodyte hamlet became, after its inauguration in 2001, a benchmark for the regional rural tourism. The process of (re-)modelling caves was a great experience and since that time I have been building and decorating caves for friends and family members that started to share my passion for this habitat. I now invite YOU to discover for yourself how relaxing it is to sleep in the womb of mother earth and only accompanied by the murmur of silence… Luc Compoint
Our caves are ideal if you wish to get away from civilization and experience a quiet secret place to rest and let all your concerns vanish. Up until 40 years ago you could find people living in small troglodyte hamlets in this wild, beautiful and forgotten part of the Granada province. The hamlets were carved into the rock on the edge of the canyons formed by the waters of a lake that existed here in ancient times. Originally caves were basic and unpretentious dwellings carved by their occupants. As people thought that living in a cave was poor, they started adding brick walls to their façades to make them look like a house or they moved into town into a “proper” building. Therefore many caves and hamlets were abandoned between the fifties and the seventies of the last century. Our Cuevas Al Jatib are situated in such a hamlet about 4-5km from the town of Baza. It`s dwellings have been remodeled and play host today to lovely holiday accommodation for you, your family and friends. It offers you modern amenities in a traditional and authentic site. The Sierra de Baza mountain range and a lovely reservoir lake surrounded by a unique landscape called badlands are very close.
